From Rescue to Recognition: Rethinking the Afghan Conflict

Abstract


In this article, I argue against identifying local patriarchies as the sole cause of Afghan women’s oppression. Instead, I examine Afghan women’s lives at the nexus of local, regional and international power dynamics. I maintain that while notions of women’s rescue are deployed to generate consent for the military mission in Afghanistan, women’s concerns continue to be peripheral to regional and international geopolitics.
