Author Guidelines

Papers may be submitted either in English or French and will be published in the language of submission. They should generally not exceed 7500 words and must be submitted in electronic form (word processed, double-spaced).

All submissions are subject to our anonymous peer review process by independent experts. Shorter papers, including commentaries and book reviews, are also welcome.

REFUGE adheres to the Chicago Manual of Style 16th Edition for social science papers and to the Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation for papers in the legal discipline (see style guide for details).

Additional Citation Specifics

  • Author identification and acknowledgement, if any, must be placed in an unnumbered note.
  • Note references must not be placed in the title line, author byline, or headings.
  • Do not place two or more note references (i.e. superscripts) at single location in the text.
  • Source notes or other explanatory notes should appear at the base of tables/figures/photographs, not in endnotes to the article.
Other Style Specifics
  • Treaty names should not be italicized
  • Abbreviations such as i.e., e.g., ibid., et al should not be italicized.
  • When numbering, please use the following system: 1, 1.1, 1.2, etc.
  • Spell out numerals under one-hundred (rather than numerals under ten) and numerals used to express age. Numerals in tables are permitted.
  • Spell out units of measure
  • Spell out “percent” instead of using “%”
  • For compound terms such as policy maker, policy making, decision maker, decision making, asylum seeker and asylum seeking, hyphenate when using as adjectives. Do not hyphenate when using as nouns.

Please note: Papers must be prepared with full citation endnotes rather than with a bibliography. Papers should include an abstract of approximately 100-150 words, highlighting the central arguments and/or findings of the paper. Papers should also include a phrase indicating institutional affiliation.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word file format.
  3. All references in the submission are in keeping with the Chicago Manual (or, where applicable, the Canadian Guide to Legal Citation).
  4. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to all other the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Style Guide.
  6. You will be able to provide a brief abstract and bibliographic statements (for all authors) as part of the article submission process.
