Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format (.doc or .docx)
  • A Works Cited is included formatted according to current MLA guidelines.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses Times New Roman 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • All identifying information is removed from the document itself to ensure double blind peer review. This includes bylines, last name before page numbers, and document authorship as set up in MS Word.
  • Audiovisual work is hosted on a third-party site and a link has been provided.

Author Guidelines

  • References should be formatted according to the MLA Handbook.
  • Please send in only Word documents for written text.
  • For Video and Sound submissions use a third-party system like Soundcloud or Youtube, and send us the link to the file. 
 
 
 
 

Critical Articles

Critical articles should be between 2500-3000 words. These articles are expected to be formatted and cited in MLA formatt and will undergo peer-review process. Please include an abstract with your submission.

Reviews

This can include reviews of books, films, art exhibits, public events, food and drink and more. So long as the review connects in some way to the subject of Pivot's 2022 issue. Reviews should be between 700-3000 words. 

Poetry

Please submit between 1-3 pages of poetry. Whether the pages consist of one long poem or three seperate poems does not matter so long as the entry fits within the page limits. 

Literary Non-Fiction

Works of literary non-fiction should be between 700-3000 words. These can include personal stories, essays, etc. 

Fiction/Short Stories

Short stories should be between 700-3000 words. 

Video Media

Please submit a proposal of about 300 words (can just write "see attached proposal" for abstract portion of submission). Once you have been notified that your proposal has been approved, you can upload a video up to 10 minutes in length. Videos can include anything from interviews, short documentaries, vlogs, literature readings and acting preformances. Please also include a 1-2 sentence description of the video within the abstract section. 

Visual Art

Please submit a digital file with your visual art for inside journal here. Cover art submissions should be sent through a seperate section. We accept photography, graphic design, paintings and drawings, as well as photos of sculpture or preformance art. In the abstract section, please include a short description or statement to accompany your work.

Cover Art

Please submit cover art for the journal's 2022 issue in this section. If your work is not choosen for the cover image, we may still accept it as a visual art piece for within the body of the journal. In the abstract section, please include a short description or statement to accompany your work.

Privacy Statement

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.
