Abstract

My essay is a critical view of the process of standardizing Saami place-names on the official maps in Sweden. The starting-point of the essay are the Saami place-names that were first published on the ordnance maps at the end of the 19th century, from 1895 and onwards. I also describe the linguistic examination regarding the publication of the later topographical and economic maps in the 1950’s, 1960’s and onward. In the conclusion of the essay I comment on the decision taken by the National Land Survey of Sweden concerning the presentation of the Saami place-names in their different varieties, North, Lule, Ume and South Saami, on the official maps.
